An older girl, a friend, had a job in the RCA factory pressing records on the the assembly line, some were for Motown Records. She would give me the singles that were too thick to pass but which were otherwise fine. That is how I discovered R&B. The one I played the most was Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" and on the flip side "Mercy, Mercy Me." I can tell you it was lonely loving Motown in the burbs!
Those two songs are still as relevant today. But for me, it is just the simple joy and hope of all my life in front of me, thinking that love could change the world, dancing to music playing on a portable turntable!
