Especially if They Started as Babies

My son put a link on his Facebook page to this: http://theyusedditbrothers.bandcamp.com/album/the-yuseddit-brothers-3 I like Tibetan Tongue the best so far, go figure.

I hardly see him anymore. I saw him pass under a window on his way to work last week when I was at his sister's setting up for the party. He is a good son, just really busy with boring work and interesting music. The link to The Yuseddit Brothers page said, "Check out this five song tribute to my shoulder" It is on the Band Camp label. Is it called label now? Anyway, interesting.

I feel a bit of the excitement I felt in the 70's with what was going on in Toronto and Montreal, only now it is world wide.

That is cool.

But now I am watching it pass under a window that I will not be jumping out of to join, this time.

Anyway, the cover picture is so perfect. You don't see his face, just his shoulder and his neighbourhood... My illusive young musician son.

While I am appreciative of the many birthday wishes, I ask that all sentiments be redirected to YOUR MOTHER'S NAME who did most of the work that day 25 years ago. In doing so I hope you'll remember that life is not a right, but a privilege; one you did not earn yourself. If you are alive right now, it is because another chose to sacrifice much and risk more, with no help from you, so that you could be. You have no inherent right to live, your existence is not 'owed' to you, but given freely by choice. It is a choice that belongs to the women making those sacrifices; a choice I hope you will defend, lest every birthday become a celebration of slavery.

Thanks son. No one wants to tell a Handmaid Tale! And for that reference please check out Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name. LOL Yes choice is essential! That said, all of us, your dad, your sister, your brother and countless others are really happy we kept you! p.s. Grandma thinks you are now the best looking of all her grandchildren. So the rest of you, consider updating your wardrobe, cutting out the carbs maybe, a trim? Chop chop!

wow, my feminist son blows me away. So for Youngest Son:

Escaping Gravity

“I’m falling into the sky.”
he said
when he was three,
looking up
imagining he
could break free.

Today I am dancing; my hobbled legs do a jig while
he plays
on his accordion.

I look up and see there are no clouds.

Last night I went to the Granite Brewery for my Young Son's twenty-fifth birthday party. I made the cake, a bit of a disaster but well received!

I painted it with food colour. Here is a picture:
It was a shared party for Y.S. and Formerly Homeless, put together by Lovely Rachel.  I was going to keep it simple because I had a lousy week, sick and now on antibiotics BUT I got a rush of inspiration.  A bit of planning would have been better.  I should have done the dragon in rice crispies covered with fondant instead of solid fondant, it weighed a tonne and then to top that off I left it on the diningroom table and after days of grey the sun came out and well, the dragon decided to have a nap and ignore the pesky Army Reserve guy.

I had a nice time. We threw together and got Y.S. a V.I.P. pass to the next comic book convention. I gave F.H. a box of his favourite treat, Jelly Babies from England. He likes to bite the heads off first so you can't hear them scream.

The day started out pissing cats and dogs but suddenly the sky cleared and the sun came out and EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT. Again.distillerydistrict5

I met Cz and her father in the distillery district, looked at a couple of books, helped pay for Cz's own book and then Y.S. came and we grabbed lunch from a bakery.

I am so exhausted. We played Talisman and by the end my little monk character was just hoping a dragon would kill him. I was SO EXHAUSTED. At one point though I had a pixie AND a unicorn as followers. HOW AWESOME IS THAT!!!!?

I finally said I had to quit at 11:30. This is why they don't usually invite me to play. Old people are wimps.

game

Y.S. WAS PISSED. He probably would have won. Oh well. I told him "it's taken me 23 years to figure out when you are being sarcastic" to which he answered, "Yeah mom, when I was a baby I was crying ironically." lol

Went to lunch on the Danforth, then on to the Roger's Center for the customer appreciation day. It was surreal being able to run around the bases. Things look very different from the field. We were given free t-shirts, hot dogs and popcorn and one signature which S.I.L. got on his hat. Son in law is a huge Blue Jay Fan and was really excited to get ? 's autograph.2014-06-15 16.15.16

I was already exhausted from Hell Week with g.d. and I'm more exhausted today but I'm a sort of exhausted happy. I wish I could just spend a day in bed but Lovely Rachel and Y.S. are coming for games.

I think Rachel is hoping for a roast dinner but I never got a ride to the free range chicken butcher and the wheels sort of fell off my emotional wagon and instead I might manage Sheppard's pie.

Lovely ladies Chaase, Meagan, and little dog, Wednesday, granny sat G.D. all day. I paid them. It was well worth it.

This game is deceptively good and while you might have anterior motives to the group, in general you have to work together. Your power to lead is tested too as once a round you are the Sheriff. :)  True to form Andrea was always whining about keeping her daddy's gun!
walking deadI didn't like all the cardboard pieces and so have taken on the job of making tiny zombies for the next game!

Limitations:  Unless you buy an expansion for the game it is only four players. The choice of characters is limited and some of them are dead now. :P

We played for a few hours in "beginner mode". We successfully survived! These guys are serious board gamers and they all gave the game the thumbs up!

I can see how it would become really challenging with the restrictions on disclosure in the more expert modes but when learning the rules which can be a confusing, definitely start at beginner!

tristaccordThis Sunday at the "Bed In".  To commemorate John Lennon and Yoko Ono's bed in here in Toronto in 1969, I think it was.

It was also international Towel Day, which I celebrated by carrying a towel all day.

But he is preforming at the Magpie and early for once so I might be able to stay up late enough to go see him!

if you click on the link you will get a recording of him first, he is playing all the instruments but has a lovely young woman backing him up!

The Morals are also playing!

Clara Engel is the "Headliner". She is lovely.

First off, it was at the Horseshoe. that is the bar where the Stones, yes as in Rolling, showed up and did an impromptu gig back in the 70's...It was also where I saw maybe the Ramones or some other head banging band (it was the Viletones! I had to look it up) in my brief punk period of youth so I was thrilled that they were playing at the horseshoe.

Reality check here however, I live in the boonies and I am well over 50 and I don't like going out after dark, ::whimper:: and then there is the whole issue of whether he would want his MOM showing up or what... I texted my daughter who is my authority on everything and said "Am I crazy to go?" and she responded with "No! He's your son!"

I must say something to about drunk young men in dark bars, "I know you have had a lot to drink and in this light I might look like a 'girl' but I am not and you just made me sad with your slurry 'hey, howisitgonnnnin?' because I have a son your age and I do not want to think of him ever making that sort of horrible mistake." Shiver. Cougar bullshit aside that is just wrong.

I was happy to see that New Son's brother was there and so I had someone to talk to and not feel so weird. we found Y.S. with his friends, his boss and a guy Mikhiel who spent some time telling me how it is spelt and pronounced, he is from Montreal and an out of work actor who loves gypsy punk so that we talked about Gorgol Bordello for a while. I didn't know he got started in New York for example...

I was prepared having listened to the band at their site to find it merely mind numbing but in fact it was solid and energetic and everyone (except me) went right up in front to nod and convulse while they played. And I really enjoyed it. Much to my surprise Y.S. took me up after and introduced me to the band and they told me that my son is very talented and shook my hands like lovely young men.

It was late and dark and scary walking home from the bus stop but I felt good. This morning I am tired but happy.

This is a bit of a cheat because I have posted this for B.F. a year ago or so, but it is my son's birthday party today and I am not able to think of much else!

He was six months old when I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cervical cancer and had to have a radical hysterecomy, meaning a long surgery and long recovery.  Ofcourse my focus was on all my children but mostly on my youngest (y.s. in all my journal entries) because I knew that if I died he would not remember me.  So everyday with him in the days that followed were extremely important.  I have learned that the others were jealous at times. I am sorry for this.  I realize that it was for myself that I distilled every bit of meaning from my moments with him.

I am at a different point now, of learning to let go so he can be an adult.  But I am allowed to revel in the success!  He is turning 23!

Escaping Gravity

“I’m falling into the sky.”
he said once
when he was three,
looking up
imagining he
could break the clouds.

Today I am dancing; my hobbled legs do a jig while
he plays a song that he wrote
on his accordion.

I still can dance with one foot in the grave.

Kites flying through rough storms
can break their strings
but when they gain
enough momentum
they can escape earth's gravity.

In all my worried dreams I never imagined this day.
I look up and see there are no clouds.

So my cousin's kid in Purity Ring well, her and the other guy.  They have been selling out all over and they are coming to our town.

G.D. has a facebook page and with a great deal of assistance on my part, though she will and does tell everyone that I have no patience and I am not a good teacher, she has learned of Meagan's fame.

So she bursts in on me saying "I WANT TO TALK TO Y.S.!!!" I told her that he would be up shortly for dinner and "could it wait?"  He was practicing which is rare given that we live on opposite sides of moon and often he cannot because someone is sleeping.  Apparently she had to talk to him right away about his taking her to Meagan's rock concert at the Pheonix Club.

I am sorry but this is so wrong on so many levels.  I said, "He talks to Meagan, I'm sure he knows that, and do you really want him to take his 91 yr. old gran and his mother to meet her at a performance?"

"I don't care if you come."

Anyway, she managed to wait till dinner to ask him and he said, "Sure. Cool. Do you want to come too mom?"

whatever )

I think it is nuts.  It will be so crowded.  Even my cousin, Meagan's dad said, "It a pretty wild scene, are you sure you want to go?"

This year my son got us tickets to the symphony, for the night before.  It is going to be exhausting getting her there and back and she really is not interested in music of any sort, but I thought it was sweet that he did that.  To have to go to the Pheonix the next night and try to guard her from getting knocked over will be extruciating, add to that my problems with being in large groups of people...

But this is all part of her need to prove to herself that she is "amazing" regardless of the suffering minion who makes it all possible.

I am exhausted but proud.  Could not sleep last night.  Great show.  SEriously mind boggling.
