All She Needed
"I know that you have all been waiting for quite a while. You, Mary is it? You look upset! I understand completely. You came here today hoping to get some help and instead you're stuck waiting. I wish I could make things go a little easier for you, I really do, but for now all I can suggest is that I put on a fresh pot of coffee. Will that help? I do want to help!"
Mary nodded and sniffled shrinking away from the grey haired woman's touch.
"Good! I am sure we can scrounge up some cookies too! Mary, would you look in the cupboards for some? I'll just stay here and chat with the other patients shall I? Oh, don't go in there dear..." Mary was looking expectantly at the door to the doctor's office.
"Coffee is coming right up! Could I ask you to help me, yes you, the young man in the hoodie? Your name is? Please speak up!"
"Seth."
"Right, Seth, you can call me Maggie."
There was a small vestibule near the reception with a clear sight line to the waiting area. Maggie constantly checked to see that everyone was seated quietly while she instructed Seth on the proper way to make drip coffee.
Time passed. Drip, drip, drip. Tick, tick, tick.
"Okay coffee's done! Who wants a cup? I know I could kill a cup!" She nodded and smiled encouragingly. "It's fresh!" A few despondent people slowly raised their hands. "Come on, don't be shy! Let's see, that's six people. Oh, I'm going to have to make another pot if I want one myself". Two hands lowered.
Maggie always knew she would enjoy reception. She was such a people person. She could understand and empathized unlike some. Empathy was what was needed in this job, empathy and good cup of coffee. When was that ever too much to ask for, honestly?
She smiled generously at Mary who had returned with a paper plate full of ginger snaps and instructed her to hand them out.
"Don't take too many! You know that too many cookies raises your blood sugar and then later you have a crash! I hate that, don't you? You feel so good for a while..."
Mary had started crying again.
"Don't get the cookies wet dear!" She sighed and patted Mary on the shoulder then gingerly stepped over the body of the dead receptionist. She sat down at the desk and peered at the computer screen. Maggie rested the gun on the desk, typed something and called out, "Is there a Mr. Mark Rousev here? The doctor will see you now won't he? I'm mean, he is completely tied up and so you can talk for as long as you need." Maggie smiled and sipped her coffee, finally, truly satisfied.
